What is an ITIN?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a United States tax processing number issued by the IRS to individuals who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain, a valid U.S. Social Security Number, but who are required to file U.S. tax returns. An ITIN is a nine-digit number that starts with the number 9 and is considered the equivalent of a Social Security Number.
